Course Content
1.
Appreciation of Qin Music Based
on Historical Documents:
the origin of qin Music; qin musicians during different historical
times;
notations; development of qin music and playing techniques.
This course will guide students to experience the aesthetics of qin and
ancient
qin players’ life wisdom.
2.
Rituals and Techniques of
Playing Qin
Qin was used as an instrument for cultivating one’s
disposition, and it has
long been a favorite and source of pleasure for Chinese literati. This course will instruct
students on the
rituals, techniques, and repertoire of qin music, and taste the
harmonious
states that historical qin players experience.
3.
The Art of Qin
The artistic sound of qin is floating, lingering, and conveys simple
elegance. Understanding
this helps the
player to experience the quiet and peaceful states that are related to
qin’s effect
in cultivation of disposition.
Requirement
Students
need to be able to experience the rhythm and musicality in the lyrics,
and to
perceive and play in proper melody and meter.
They should be capable of experiencing the aesthetics of
qin music in association
with the literary lyrics. It
is hoped
that students establish their own artistic basis of qin.
