Introduction and Objectives
音樂在歐洲文化史中所扮演的角色,並非一直是我們認為的,聲音的藝術。本課程以原典閱讀為手段,探討音樂
(musica) 在歐洲歷史中不同面向的展現。
課程大致分為兩個部份:前半討論音樂從中世紀一直到十九世紀的不同呈現方式,課程後半為二十世紀中葉以來,將音樂當成符號、社會現實、政治實踐、以及人類生命真實的最高表現等。
This course focuses on how "music" has been
regarded as a species of knowledge in European history. Through the ages
whether as musica mundana or as
actual sounding phenomena, music has been incorporated into different branches
of knowledge. This course explores these different incorporations, including
seeing music as display of mathematical laws, as linguistic signs, as social
facts, and as the expression of philosophical "truth".

Requirements
本課程為以討論為主的進階討論課,修課同學除了在學期末必須完成一含參考書目之書面報告外,其餘評量標準皆以期中之討論與口頭報告表現。成績評量標準如下:
This course is a discussion-oriented graduate seminar.
Students taking the course are responsible for at least one class presentation
and a research paper submitted by the end of the semester.
一、口頭報告 (oral reports) 20%
二、上課參與 (class participation) 20%
三、學期報告 (final paper) 60%
